Machine Tool Auctions: What Sells and Who Buys
A machine tool auction is a sale of the equipment that cuts, forms, and measures metal: CNC machining centers, turning centers, Swiss-type lathes, grinders, EDM, and the manual lathes and knee mills that still earn their floor space. Each of those categories has its own buyers, so a machine shop sale is really a dozen small markets running at once.
Late-model CNC machining centers and turning centers with known spindle hours draw the deepest bidding, from job shops adding capacity, contract manufacturers chasing a new program, and dealers who buy to resell. Swiss-type lathes pull medical and aerospace component shops. Older manual machines, inspection equipment, and tooling go to smaller shops, maintenance departments, and exporters. Price follows the same few facts in every category: control generation, spindle hours, maintenance records, the tooling that goes with the machine, and whether a buyer can see it running under power.
That last point matters more than most sellers expect. A machine photographed warm, with video of the spindle turning and the control powered up, sells for more than the same machine shown cold behind a locked door, so we build every catalog around it. We also price your shop from what machine tools are selling for right now, because our parent company KD Machinery sells more than 750 machine tools a year. That is the Power of Two: an auction and a retail channel under one firm.

Three Ways to Sell a Machine Shop
Managed auction
The default for a complete shop. We catalog, photograph, and market every machine to our 500,000+ industry contacts, bidders compete online, and buyers remove under our supervision. A managed auction runs 6 to 10 weeks from engagement to settlement.
Cash purchase
We buy the shop, or selected machines, outright. You get an offer in 24 to 72 hours, funds typically 3 to 7 days after acceptance, and removal in 1 to 2 weeks. The right answer when a lease date, not the recovery number, drives the decision.
Consignment
One machine or a handful, placed into an upcoming multi-seller sale alongside complementary equipment, with the same marketing a complete shop gets. Best for a shop that is downsizing rather than closing.
Many shops use more than one path. A cash floor on the anchor machines gives you a number you can plan around, and the rest of the shop goes to auction for the upside. After the walkthrough you get a written recommendation with a net proceeds range for each path and the calendar each one implies, so the decision rests on numbers rather than a sales pitch.
Wherever the shop is, we are onsite within 48 to 72 hours of engagement to walk the floor and record makes, models, serials, and condition. Online bidding lets a buyer several states away compete on the same lot as the shop down the road. See our service areas, or consign a single machine.

Common Questions
Machine Shop Auction FAQ
How long does a machine shop auction take?
A managed machine shop auction runs 6 to 10 weeks from engagement to settlement. That covers the onsite walkthrough, cataloging and photography, the marketing campaign, the bidding window, and supervised buyer removal. We are onsite within 48 to 72 hours of engagement, so the calendar starts quickly.
Can KD buy my machine shop outright instead?
Yes. We make direct cash offers on complete shops and on individual machines. You get an offer in 24 to 72 hours, funds typically 3 to 7 days after acceptance, and removal in 1 to 2 weeks. An outright purchase trades some upside for certainty of amount and date, and we will tell you plainly when an auction would net you more.
What does it cost to auction a machine shop?
Our fee is tailored to the engagement and quoted upfront, and most sellers pay nothing out of pocket because costs come out of the sale rather than being invoiced in advance. You will have the complete economics in writing before you commit to anything.
Which machine tool brands do you sell?
All makes. The brands we see most often include Haas, Mazak, Okuma, DMG Mori, Doosan, Makino, Hurco, Citizen, Star, and Hardinge, along with grinders, EDM, and inspection equipment from many other builders.
Can I sell one CNC machine instead of the whole shop?
Yes. A single machine or a small group can be consigned into an upcoming multi-seller sale, where it gets the same marketing as a complete shop, or we can make a cash offer on it. If you are downsizing rather than closing, that is usually a better fit than a dedicated auction.
Who handles rigging and removal after the sale?
Buyers are responsible for their own rigging and removal under the terms of sale. We supervise the removal period onsite so machines leave safely and only against a paid invoice, and we can point buyers to qualified riggers who know how to move machine tools.
