The Engagement

ZEV X, an electric vehicle battery technology company based in Gilbert, Arizona, underwent a restructuring that required the complete liquidation of its 150,000 square foot manufacturing and R&D facility. The asset base included battery assembly and formation equipment, high-voltage test and cycling systems, thermal management manufacturing equipment, precision CNC machining centers, electrical and power infrastructure, and a complete cleanroom and controlled environment build-out.

EV battery manufacturing equipment represents one of the most specialized and rapidly evolving segments of the industrial liquidation market. Buyer pools span established EV manufacturers, battery pack assemblers, defense energy storage programs, grid storage companies, and emerging EV startups, many located outside the United States. Standard industrial auction marketing would miss the majority of the relevant buyer base.

The Approach

KD's marketing strategy for ZEV X went beyond the domestic industrial buyer database. The team identified and directly contacted EV battery manufacturers and pack assemblers in North America, Europe, and Asia, including buyers in South Korea, Germany, and Canada who are active acquirers of U.S. battery manufacturing infrastructure as global EV capacity expands.

The auction was structured to accommodate international bidder participation, with lot descriptions and technical specifications translated into key languages and extended inspection windows offered for remote buyers conducting due diligence through video and third-party inspection agents.

Battery formation and test equipment, the highest-value asset class in the facility, was catalogued with full technical specifications, OEM documentation, and cycle count records to support the valuations sophisticated buyers require. KD's team coordinated with the facility's technical staff during the inspection period to ensure buyer questions were answered accurately.

The Result

Total recovery surpassed $1 million, a strong outcome for a specialized asset class in a market where recovery rates can vary widely depending on the quality of buyer reach. The auction attracted registered bidders from seven countries, with competitive bidding on battery formation and test equipment from buyers in both domestic and international markets.

The engagement was completed on schedule, meeting ZEV X's restructuring timeline requirements. Full removal was coordinated within the facility lease expiration window, and all proceeds were settled and documented for the company's restructuring counsel.

This engagement established KD as an established partner for EV and battery manufacturing liquidations, a sector the firm has continued to serve as the EV industry's rapid expansion and consolidation cycle continues.
