The Engagement
A Pennsylvania precision machine shop with a significant Doosan CNC asset base was closed following the owner's retirement after three decades of operation. The facility housed more than 60 CNC assets including Doosan turning centers, Doosan Infracore machining centers, horizontal and vertical CNC lathes, CMM and metrology equipment, tooling libraries, and full facility support infrastructure.
The seller was a private owner with no prior liquidation experience. KD was recommended by the company's bank, which had a blanket lien on the equipment. The bank required a managed, fully documented disposition process. KD assessed the assets and recommended the right path forward.
The Approach
KD assessed the facility, evaluated the Doosan asset base, and developed a disposition strategy that fit both the bank's timeline and the seller's objectives.
The marketing campaign was precision-targeted: Doosan equipment has a well-established secondary market, and KD's national buyer database includes active buyers of Korean-manufactured CNC equipment across the aerospace, defense, automotive, and job shop sectors. Direct outreach was made to known Doosan buyers, regional machine shops replacing aging equipment, and contract machining operations looking to expand capacity at a price point below new equipment.
The auction was structured to run Doosan turning and machining centers as premium individual lots with 48-hour extended bidding on the final day, a format that consistently drives the last increment of competitive bidding on high-value CNC assets.
The Result
Total recovery surpassed $5 million, well above pre-sale estimates, delivering a surplus return that the bank applied to the remaining loan balance with a significant recovery for the owner.
The auction drew buyers from 14 states and two Canadian provinces. Several Doosan turning centers drew competitive bidding from multiple registered machine shops, with the most active lot running 23 increments above its opening bid. All equipment was removed within the 30-day removal window, and full settlement documentation was delivered to the bank within 10 business days of auction close.
The bank's asset manager reported that the engagement exceeded the institution's expectations and that KD would be the first call on any future CNC liquidation referral.
